Luke Smith, Linux YouTuber, is wrongly convicted for spreading “hate” on YouTube after writing “IQ” and “Molyneux” as tags for one of his videos, and is sent to life in SoyDev Prison, a bleak place where the warden, Bill Gates, forces inmates to test the latest version of Windows, and fed grass and bugs to “protect” the environment.
Inside, Luke stands out. He rants about the evils of bugman society and advocates for open source software. Mental Outlaw, a privacy guru who narrates the story, is in prison after one of his videos happened to feature a YouTube Downloader program in the Linux Mint Flatpack manager.
Luke keeps to himself, praying to Jesus and reading the Bible. Eventually, he asks Mental Outlaw for a stick and three blocks of cobblestone.
Over time, the two become close friends. Luke, overhearing the prison guards complain about bloat and viruses, invites them to install “Windows 11” and installs Linux Mint with a Windows 11 aesthetics (the guards couldn’t tell the difference because the only program they use is Microsoft Edge, which has an official Linux build). Unknownst to the guards, Luke has root remote access to their laptops, secretly funnelling out evidence of Terry Davis’ supposed “suicide”.
Luke transforms the grim prison library into the SoyDev Free Software Center, full of guides on how to build your own website, guides on Linux, and copies of the Industrial Society and Its Future. Soon, prisoners rebel against having to use Windows, demanding to use Linux (Arch, btw) and open-source software.
Bill Gates grows wary, knowing Luke holds secrets that could expose him. As he prepared to transfer Luke to Epstein Island, Luke vanishes one stormy night.
In a dawn raid, the guards discover Luke tunnelled through the wall behind his Richard Stallman poster using a pickaxe he constructed using stick and cobblestone. He crawled through a tunnel full of vegan food like grass and broccoli, and bugs, before finally emerging free, carrying the .docx files (yuck!) revealing the truth as to how Terry Davis was murdered, as well as other confidential information, on a USB drive.
Luke leaks the information to r/linux and r/privacy. As a consequence, Redditors argued, upvoted and downvoted one another, and spoke of revolutions. Bill Gates, seeing all of this, cancelled his planned AMA post and signed out of Reddit. The Redditors proceeded to post threads about “payback” and “vengeance” but ultimately did nothing.
Mental Outlaw eventually gets paroled. Upon returning to his Based Farm and digging up a concealed ThinkPad, he receives a message on XMPP, the message simply says:
“Join me.
IP: 45.135.23.17
Port: 25565”
The final scene shows Mental Outlaw sitting at his ThinkPad at his Based Farm, logging into Luke’s survival Minecraft server. He spawns in a blocky world, and in the distance, he sees Luke doing the crotch gesture repeatedly while punching the air at him.
